Description: Martin appeared in the Rodgers and Hammerstein
hit South Pacific based on James Michener's Tales of the South Pacific.
Several of its songs, including "Bali Ha'i," "Some Enchanted Evening,"
"Younger than Springtime," and "A Wonderful Guy" have become worldwide
standards. The Broadway production of South Pacific was nominated
for ten Tony Awards and won all of them, including Best Musical, Best
Score and Best Libretto. It was the only musical production ever to
win all four Tony Awards for acting. The show was a critical and box
office hit.
Critics loved Mary Martin in the comic role of Ensign Nellie Forbush,
the role which won her a Tony award.
Dressed in a red cotton bathing suit with white print, red oil cloth
side snap shoes and a jacket and pants of blue denim-like material.
The pants are pedal pusher length and the jacket is both embroidered
with Mary Martin in script and tagged Mary Martin South Pacific.
Of course, she has the signature reddish brown caracul wig. "Gonna
wash that man right outta ma' hair"
